The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a five-year, $35 million contract extension with TE Vance McDonald on Friday, according to ESPN NFL Insiders Adam Schefter and Adam Caplan. The Niners have been pleased with how McDonald has progressed this season with GM Trent Baalke recently praising McDonald's all-around game. McDonald has set career highs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in the first 12 games, though those numbers are still very modest. With plenty of cap space, the Niners are betting that McDonald will continue to ascend.

Steelers could be without up to four starters for Buffalo - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (out, foot), DT Javon Hargrave (doubtful, concussion), K Chris Boswell (questionable, abdomen) and OG Ramon Foster (questionable, chest). Foster and Hargrave didn't practice all week, so their chances are not looking good. Boswell is a game-time decision.

The defense called a crime lab deputy, Madelyn Collins, to testify about gunshot residue. She said gunshot residue was found on Will Smith's hands, explaining it could possibly come from firing a gun, being near a gun when it's discharged or touching a gun that had been discharged. The state had her specify that she found only two particles on the back of each hand, one on the left palm and none on the right palm -- and that it's possible residue could come from a gun being fired into his vehicle. The defense has been hinting at the possibility that Smith may have held or fired a gun that was removed or moved at the scene.

A private detective for the defense testifies about a female witness who told him she thought she saw former NOPD captain Billy Ceravolo reach across Will Smith's body toward the glove compartment and pull out what she thought was a gun. The state gets the detective to acknowledge that she was wrong about Ceravolo being there at the time she said -- since surveillance video proved he wasn't there yet. The detective, David Olasky, said, "Some things about her story were true, some things she might have gotten wrong or confused. ... (But) I believe she saw someone removing something from the area of the glove box." The state has spent much of the day criticizing defense attorney John Fuller for publicly making such suggestions about Ceravolo, who took the stand earlier.
