Keep an eye on: Ryan Mallett. The backup quarterback looked awful in filing in for Joe Flacco (back) with the first team on Friday. He was intercepted at least five times and was nearly picked off two more times. On his last interception, Mallett threw his white towel in the air. His struggles were noticed by linebacker Terrell Suggs. "Hey Marty [Mornhinweg, offensive coordinator], tell Mallett to throw to the guys wearing the purple jerseys [the offense]," Suggs said.

Overheard at camp: As the team circled around coach Ron Rivera to begin the first practice in pads, Rivera called on defensive end Julius Peppers and tight end Greg Olsen to get the hitting off in the Oklahoma drill. Olsen found a way out of facing the 6-foot-7, 295-pound Peppers, saying his helmet snaps weren't working. That got more than a few chuckles. During warmups, safety Kurt Coleman walked to the sideline and asked a young member of the public relations staff if he knew who John Lennon was. He didn't. Said Coleman, "Got to know your culture.''
