Jon Gruden, on Khalil Mack: "That might be the toughest decision I have to figure out right now. We're not the only team that's faced with that. It's tough. It's part of this business and we'll just keep our fingers crossed."

After three offseason surgeries, offensive lineman Kyle Long was a full participant in the Bears' first practice. "I got to hit other guys and that was fun," Long said. "I don't look much into psychological hurdles. But a physical hurdle? Yes it was. I had a lot going on this offseason."

It was wet and stormy for the Bears' first training camp practice on Friday. New coach Matt Nagy said there was virtually no chance the team would practice inside (despite several showers during the two-hour period). With the Patriots placing longshot OL Andrew Jelks (Vanderbilt) on the reserve/retired list Friday, it opens a spot on the team's 90-man roster. The Patriots would ideally like to have three full offensive-line units for camp, so filling the open spot with an offensive lineman would be the best-case scenario for them. There are currently 13 offensive linemen on the roster, although not all are 100 percent healthy.
