The jury has been sent back to a local New Orleans hotel for the evening concluding the fifth and final day of testimony in the Will Smith shooting trial where admitted shooter Cardell Hayes testified Saturday for two hours. Hayes says he shot Will Smith after following Smith to his Mercedes but only after he saw Smith retrieve a black gun from his car. Hayes says it was not until he heard a pop that he fired his .45 caliber pistol. Hayes also denied knowingly shooting Racquel Smith. And Hayes also denied ever standing over Will Smith's body and saying anything about "showing off for the white boy," as Racquel Smith testified. Hayes says he was not proud about his actions and "wished that night had never happened." He also expressed sorrow that Will Smith, who he admired as a great player, could no longer be with his family, seeming to tear up as he looked at Racquel while he said it. The jury returns for closing arguments Sunday morning. They will likely begin deliberations Sunday afternoon to decide the fate of Cardell Hayes.

The defense rests in the Will Smith shooting death trial. Now the state is putting on its rebuttal case beginning with ballistics expert Meredith Acosta who will clarify that all 9 shell casings tested for Hayes' Ruger .45 caliber pistol. Hayes testified that before pulling the trigger he saw Smith grab a gun from his car and then heard a pop before firing the shots that took Smith's life. Closing arguments will follow the state's rebuttal.

Patriots officially rule out WR Danny Amendola (ankle) for Monday's game against the Ravens. Safety Jordan Richards (knee), TE Martellus Bennett (ankle/shoulder), LB Elandon Roberts (hamstring), CB Eric Rowe (hamstring), and special teams captain Matthew Slater (foot) are all questionable.

Ravens G Marshal Yanda is listed as questionable but will play Monday against Patriots. Baltimore is otherwise very healthy going into New England.

Next the state will put on its rebuttal case. Likely to include recorded jail calls where Cardell Hayes allegedly makes disparaging remarks about Racquel Smith (calling her a phony) and suggesting she will have to present her dead husband at the Hall of Fame. Hayes denies making those statements.

Cardell Hayes says he shot Will Smith last April because "I had no other options. My life was on the line." His attorney John Fuller supports Hayes re-telling of events though it contradicts versions provided by most other witnesses. "They saw what they saw and heard what they heard. You saw what you saw and heard what you heard." Both sides are done questioning Hayes who is done testifying after almost exactly two hours on the stand.

Cardell Hayes steps down from the stand. His total amount of testimony was about two hours with a lunch break in between.
