Former Chargers center Nick Hardwick spoke with first-year players at the team's rookie transition program this week. Hardwick said his main message to the nearly two dozen rookies in attendance was to treat football as a profession. "You can get after it and you can compete, but if you're not a professional you're flailing," Hardwick said.

It appears Derek Carr will be the next NFL quarterback to raise the salary bar, with ESPN reporting he is close to a deal worth $25 million per year. That shouldn't dramatically affect Drew Brees' next contract, since he is already in that financial ballpark – and since he and the Saints appear to be operating in the mode of one-year deals instead of long-term extensions. Brees, 38, signed a one-year extension worth $24.25 million during Week 1 of last season after the Saints balked at a long-term commitment. It's quite possible the same thing will happen again this year – or maybe they'll even be content to wait until after the season -- since Brees has made it clear that he wants to stay in New Orleans and neither side appears to be pressing to get a new deal done.

MVP Matt Ryan ($20.75 million/year) is 1 of 11 NFL QBS currently averaging more than $20 million per year and 1 of 9 with $50 million plus guaranteed in their contracts. With Adam Schefter reporting Raiders Derek Carr on verge of $25 million per year to top Colts Andrew Luck ($24.594/year), it will be interesting to see what's next up for the 32-year-old Ryan coming off his best season. Ryan has two years and $35 million left on his deal, and owner Arthur Blank said Ryan "needs to be compensated well, and he will be."
