Matthew Stafford said this one is a "big one" if they can get it done, meaning the Lions win in Chicago. Believes division games count twice -- a win for one team and a loss for the other division team.

When asked if it's possible to get more of a rise out of Drew Brees in return to San Diego, Sean Payton said, "The competitor in all of us needs to get this first win." Payton said the teams, coaching staffs, organizations are different than they were when Brees was let go by Chargers in 2006. But he did point out that it's surprising the Saints haven't been to San Diego in more than a decade – the only team they haven't faced on the road since '06 because of a change to NFL's west-coast travel schedule a few years back.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on whether opposing quarterbacks might start avoiding Chiefs CB Marcus Peters: "That's easier said than done. If you have a guy that eliminates one side of the field, as an offense you're kind of stuck. You have to pick and choose your battles."

Sean Payton has high praise for undrafted rookie CB Ken Crawley, even though he knows there will be "some bumps along the way." "Man, I know this, it's not too big for him, and I like that," Payton said. ... He said Crawley has good ball skills and was in good position on the big catch late in New York, even though Victor Cruz made the catch. Payton said he liked the cornerback play in general in Monday's loss to Falcons.

With the Patriots not making injured QBs Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett available for the regular Wednesday news conference for the starting quarterback, TE Rob Gronkowski will take their place (11:45 a.m. ET).

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on Chiefs CB Marcus Peters: "He catches every ball that's thrown his way. Offensive guys always make fun of defensive players, that they play defense for a reason, because they can't catch. Well, he can catch everything. If it hits him in the hands, he catches it. If it bounces up in the air, he catches it. What a tremendous talent."

Sean Payton on Saints' run defense Monday: "It's one of those tapes you want to make sure there's not a lot of copies of out there, because it wasn't pretty." Payton said the issues were mental and physical. "We're late, we're behind blocks, we're on the ground more, we're reaching more. Alignments were poor. In general we didn't play well at all at linebacker. And in the front, we were average at best."

Ravens rookie RB Kenneth Dixon practiced off to the side during Wednesday's practice. Dixon, Baltimore's most impressive back this summer, hasn't played in the regular season after spraining his knee in the third preseason game.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

The Bucs have signed wide receiver Jonathan Krause to the practice squad. He was with the team during the preseason.

Ravens chartered a plane so players and coaches could attend Tuesday's wake and Wednesday's funeral for former defensive line coach Clarence Brooks in Massachusetts. WR Steve Smith, G Marshal Yanda and C Jeremy Zuttah were excused from Wednesday's practice to attend the funeral.
