During portion of practice open to media, 49ers S Jaquiski Tartt (neck) was participating. He went through warmups, special teams and individual drills. Good sign for the Niners who will be without Eric Reid this week because of a left knee injury.

The Patriots signed defensive back Robert Nelson (Arizona State) to their practice squad. The team had an open spot. The practice squad now consists of Nelson, WR Demarcus Ayers, DL Angelo Blackson, C James Ferentz, DE Geneo Grissom, WR Cody Hollister, S David Jones, CB Ryan Lewis, S Damarius Travis, CB Jomal Wiltz.

Cardinals receiver Jaron Brown, who tore his left ACL last season, said he hyperextended the same knee late in the fourth quarter against the Colts when safet Matthias Farley fell on his left knee. Brown said the knee was sore Monday. "Fortunately it wasn't any more serious," he said. "It was kind of a scary moment. I was able to get back up and walk around on it."

In light of Lawrence Timmons' suspension, the Dolphins acquired LB Stephone Anthony in a trade with the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed 2018 draft pick.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, on what his good friend and former coworker Sean McVay has done with the Rams' offense: "He's done a good job. They're playing really well. It looks very similar to what we do schematically. It looks very similar to how it was in Washington when we were there and how it was with Jay (Gruden)."

Matt LaFleur's brother, Mike, worked with him in Atlanta and now coaches 49ers wide receivers on Kyle Shanahan's staff. "No awkwardness," LaFleur said of facing him. "It will be interesting." LaFleur knows a lot of the coaches on that staff. "I'm sure there will be some mixed feelings," he said.
