Sean Payton said Drew Brees had the top time or one of the two best times in Wednesday's conditioning test. The 38-year-old is certainly not showing signs of his age physically. ... Payton said RB Adrian Peterson also came into camp in great shape. Payton did say that one player failed to pass the conditioning test and will be placed on the PUP list -- but he wouldn't reveal which player.

It wouldn't be a Cowboys camp if a quarterback didn't have a back issue. Backup Zac Dysert is not practicing because of a sore back.

Sean Payton said LB Dannell Ellerbe's release came down to "availability." Ellerbe missed 17 games over the last two years because of various minor injuries and was expected to miss the first couple weeks of training camp with a foot issue. Payton said there is value in moving on from the uncertainty and giving the practice reps to other players who could use the development.

Saints coach Sean Payton said he's confident Terron Armstead will play this season. He didn't want to put a target date on it yet but said he expects the left tackle to contribute at some point this season --though he will definitely miss some games because of shoulder surgery. Payton also said the team is still hoping C Max Unger will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

A couple things of note from the Cardinals' depth chart for their first preseason game, the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3: - DT Josh Mauro was listed as a starter with the base defense. Mauro's snaps were expected to increase this season since he re-signed after the departure of Calais Campbell. - Justin Bethel was listed as the starting right cornerback, ahead of Brandon Williams. This is not surprising considering how well Bethel has practiced thus far. - Antoine Bethea was listed as the starting SS in base, ahead of Tyvon Branch. Branch had been playing SS with the first-team defense with Bethea coming in as the nickel safety. - J.J. Nelson was listed as the kick returner while Patrick Peterson was listed as the punt returner. - Incumbent punter Matt Wile was listed ahead of Richie Leone, who's challenging him for his job.

The Saints waived third-year RB/KR Marcus Murphy on Wednesday. And recently-signed veteran offensive lineman Chris Watt retired. Murphy was a seventh-round draft pick in 2015 who played heavily as a kickoff and punt returner as a rookie – highlighted by a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown. But his playing time decreased significantly last year, and the Saints drafted another RB/KR in Alvin Kamara this year, as well as adding receiver/return man Ted Ginn Jr. in free agency. Watt, 26, signed with the Saints last month after a minicamp tryout. He began his career as a third-round draft pick with the Chargers out of Notre Dame in 2014. He started eight games from 2014-2015.
