Overheard: "We don't have any motorized tackling dummies or anything like that. They wanted to have a unit where they threw water balloons at the media, but I said, nah. I wasn't for it." – Packers coach Mike McCarthy to the media before the first training camp practice.

Rookie report: The Packers are easing top pick Kevin King into things. After he missed most of the offseason program because his school (Washington) was still in session, the second-round cornerback worked mostly with the No. 2 defense on Day 1. "Mentally, I know Kevin's ready go," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. It may not be long before King moves his way in with the starters but for now, Davon House and LaDarius Gunter took the first-team reps.

Best play of Packers' camp Day 1: The Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams connection that took off last season was on display early. Rodgers delivered a perfect deep ball to Adams, who had beaten cornerback LaDarius Gunter on a go route. Adams barely had to outstretch for the ball that he caught in stride for a 60-yard touchdown. Gunter's biggest weakness is speed, and it showed when he let Adams beat get behind him.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Thursday he was "disappointed" in arrest of DL Adolphus Washington on July 9 and is "thankful no one was hurt." McDermott and GM Brandon Beane met with Washington, who pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor concealed firearm charge Monday in Cincinnati.

Martavis Bryant will be with the Steelers during camp and hopes to finalize his reinstatement soon, per source. The statement from GM Kevin Colbert on his status: "Upon his conditional reinstatement in April, Martavis Bryant was made aware it was only the beginning of a process toward a return to being a full contributing member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. We have been informed by the NFL that Martavis is still in the process of being fully reinstated. "Until that time, Martavis will be permitted to take part in off-the-field team activities at training camp, but he will not be permitted to practice or play in any games."

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Thursday that Buffalo's training staff has put together a "rep count" for WR Sammy Watkins (foot) that will fluctuate up and down during training camp.

Mike Rodak ESPN Staff Writer

Bills WR Sammy Watkins' reps will be "managed" at the start of training camp, coach Sean McDermott said Thursday. McDermott said he is pleased with how Watkins has worked to recover from offseason foot surgery. Starting LT Cordy Glenn (ankle) will also be limited at the start of camp, McDermott said.

Cam Newton throws about a 35-yard pass to wide receiver Russell Shepard, who was wide open. The ball was a little under thrown but coaches and doctors don't want Newton to turn it loose just yet.

From Thursday's Broncos practice ... Overheard: Quarterback Paxton Lynch on why he cuts the sleeves off the t-shirts he wears under his shoulder pads: "I had a coach at Memphis tell me 'nothing grows in the shade'." And on the Broncos moving quickly through a practice that came in under two hours, coach Vance Joseph said: "it's about being fast, it's about being clean."

From Thursday's Broncos practice ... Rookie report: As expected first-round pick Garett Bolles got some work at left tackle with the starting offense. Bolles has steadily worked his way up the depth chart throughout the offseason and still looks on track to be the starter in the regular season if the Broncos see what they want to see in the preseason games as well as the joint practices with the 49ers in August. Second-round pick DeMarcus Walker left practice and didn't return with what coach Vance Joseph called "heat issues." Walker said earlier this week he had tried to train at altitude for two weeks before camp opened to be prepared. He's expected to practice Friday.

From Thursday's Broncos practice ... Best play: Any time Von Miller was set loose in 1-on-1 pass rush drills. Miller looks fit and poised for another year when he's in the conversation for Defensive Player of the Year. Miller repeatedly showed his speed to the corner in the 1-on-1 drills as well as the ability to make the transition from speed to power when he needs to. The Broncos will practice in pads for the first time in this training camp on Sunday morning.

He's entering a contract year and says he wants this year to be "different."
