Source: Once signed, Derek Carr's new contract will make him the NFL's highest paid player in terms of new money average. Meaning, the new money in Carr's deal will average more per year than Andrew Luck's $24.6 million.

It appears Derek Carr will be the next NFL quarterback to raise the salary bar, with ESPN reporting he is close to a deal worth $25 million per year. That shouldn't dramatically affect Drew Brees' next contract, since he is already in that financial ballpark – and since he and the Saints appear to be operating in the mode of one-year deals instead of long-term extensions. Brees, 38, signed a one-year extension worth $24.25 million during Week 1 of last season after the Saints balked at a long-term commitment. It's quite possible the same thing will happen again this year – or maybe they'll even be content to wait until after the season -- since Brees has made it clear that he wants to stay in New Orleans and neither side appears to be pressing to get a new deal done.

MVP Matt Ryan ($20.75 million/year) is 1 of 11 NFL QBS currently averaging more than $20 million per year and 1 of 9 with $50 million plus guaranteed in their contracts. With Adam Schefter reporting Raiders Derek Carr on verge of $25 million per year to top Colts Andrew Luck ($24.594/year), it will be interesting to see what's next up for the 32-year-old Ryan coming off his best season. Ryan has two years and $35 million left on his deal, and owner Arthur Blank said Ryan "needs to be compensated well, and he will be."

Derek Carr's potential new contract is good news for any QB seeking a new deal -- like Washington's Kirk Cousins. Worth approximately $25 million per year, Carr's deal certainly raises the bar, but it's one the Redskins were unlikely to hit anyway. And Cousins' goal hasn't been to become the highest-paid passer, but rather to be paid commensurate with his leverage, starting at his tag number of $23.9 million. If the Redskins hit that, with the right guarantees, it has a shot at leading to a deal -- regardless of Carr's average.

With the Raiders and Derek Carr closing in on a possible $25 million a year deal according to Adam Schefter, this puts Matthew Stafford in position to become the league's highest-paid player whenever he agrees to a contract extension. On Tuesday, when I asked Rod Wood if he'd be comfortable making Stafford the league's highest-paid player, he told me he's "comfortable getting a deal done" with him. He added that whether Stafford is the highest-paid or not, he'll likely only be that until the next high-level QB is up for an extension.
