Today's Chiefs rookie camp roundup: The Chiefs wrapped up their three-day mini-camp with a 75-minute practice session. The Chiefs worked without quarterback Alex Smith, tight end Travis Kelce and linebacker Derrick Johnson, who were excused. The passing game, which struggled the first two days of camp, perked up with quarterbacks Tyler Bray, Patrick Mahomes II and Joel Stave combining to complete 12-of-16 passes in the 7-on-7 drills. The Chiefs finished with the highlight of the day, a diving catch in the end zone by undrafted rookie tight end Emanuel Byrd. The Chiefs will soon be on to bigger things. Veterans report to training camp later today and the full squad practices for the first time on Friday.

Eli Apple with the new look. Cut the locks. He said guys have been getting on him already, slapping his head a lot. Had this look when Ohio St. won national championship though.

Overheard at camp: Former Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey (hip) had a big smile on his face and an extended practice conversation with head coach Adam Gase as he dressed for the first time in 2017. Pouncey didn't participate in individual or team drills but it was a good sign of progress as the team plans to have him ready by the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

Rookie report at camp: With veteran Koa Misi (neck) put on injured reserve this week, rookie Raekwon McMillan is expected to take over a starting role and make an immediate impact for Miami. The second-round pick is getting an extended look in training camp and has meshed well thus far with veteran linebackers Lawrence Timmons and Kiko Alonso.

Best play at camp: Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill kicked off training camp in grand fashion. His first throw in team drills was a jump ball to wide receiver DeVante Parker, who leaped over cornerback Xavien Howard for the touchdown. Parker is expected to make a jump in Year 3, and this was a good start and strong first practice for the former No. 14 overall pick.

One other Packers injury note: TE Aaron Peck (hamstring) is starting camp on the non-football injury list. He's an undrafted rookie from Fresno State.

John Urschel's surprising retirement continues a rocky 2017 for the Ravens. Since the end of last season (and before the first snap of training camp), Baltimore watched leading tackler Zach Orr retire, its leader in receptions Dennis Pitta suffer a likely career-ending hip injury, promising cornerback Tavon Young tear his ACL and elusive running back Kenneth Dixon sustain a season-ending knee injury. Plus, quarterback Joe Flacco is expected to be out a week of camp with a back injury.
