The Panthers have placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Kawann Short as expected. He will count an estimated $14..77 million against the salary cap. The goal remains to work out a long-term deal. But this was a must move for Carolina.

Only a few minor changes to the Packers coaching staff for 2017. David Raih moves to a new position: offensive perimeter coach. He was assistant offensive line coach. Jeff Blasko moves into that role. Tim McGarigle joins the staff as defensive quality control coach. No one gets the associate head coach/offense title vacated when Tom Clements left after last season.

Other players expected to be tagged by Wednesday deadline include Kirk Cousins, Le'Veon Bell, Kawann Short, Melvin Ingram, Trumaine Johnson.

The Cardinals announced that they've placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on outside linebacker Chandler Jones for the 2017 season. That will allow Arizona and Jones to negotiate a long-term team until 4 p.m. ET on July 15. If another team gives Jones an offer sheet, the Cardinals can either match it or they'll receive two first-round picks as compensation.

Fledgling OF Tim Tebow, in a press conference before his first spring-training workout with the Mets, was asked if he got a fair shake with the Jets in 2012. He laughed. "Where did that come from? Been holding onto that one for three years?" he asked. He went on to say, "That's not for me to decide at all. The one thing with the Jets situation was I learned so much from it. I'm grateful for the highs there, which weren't really many. Not necessarily the most fun situation. I think that everything happens for a reason. I learned so much from it."

The Jaguars have signed OL Greg Van Roten to add depth to the offensive line. The Jaguars are expected to make the offensive line the priority in free agency as well as the draft since the unit struggled the past several seasons and they have already agreed to a trade with Miami for OT Branden Albert. The 27-year-old Van Roten spent the last two seasons with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. He also spent time with Green Bay and Seattle since signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2012.

At this point, Kirk Cousins believes in his best interests for #Redskins to use franchise tag on him 2nd time to ensure never happens again

The Browns released WR Andrew Hawkins, who posted on Twitter that he and the team felt it was "in the best intersest of all that we move on." Hawkins had 33 receptions and three touchdowns in 2016.

Not sure why the $17 million franchise tag for Alshon Jeffery should matter to the Bears, who will have $75 million in cap space post-Cutler

The Panthers have signed defensive end Wes Horton to a two-year deal 24 hours after re-signing end Mario Addison to a three-year deal. Horton has been a solid run stopper that has earned him 27 starts over the last four seasons. Fills another need. Addison is more of a pass rusher. Sets up position by committee.
