Hue Jackson on DeShone Kizer starting Saturday night in Tampa Bay: "I don't ever want to put something on someone too soon if they're not ready. But he's demonstrated that he's ready, so let's give him a chance to see if he can do it."

ROOKIE REPORT: Sean Payton praised CB Marshon Lattimore for his performance since returning from the knee injury that sidelined him for two weeks. "I thought he had a good week, thought he had a good week," Payton said enthusiastically. The Saints' top draft pick (11th overall) wasn't targeted in his preseason debut against the Chargers – and he did slip up when he whiffed on RB Melvin Gordon in the open field. But Lattimore generally held his own in the game and in two days of joint practices with the Chargers to get quickly back up to speed. Lattimore looks poised to be a Week 1 starter in the wake of Delvin Breaux's injury. "Considering the missed injury time, I thought it was an important week for him," Payton said.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says FS Jimmie Ward will come off PUP list today and participate in practice today on a limited basis. Unsure if he will play Sunday night against Minnesota but he is at least ready to get back in the mix after hamstring injury.

Hue Jackson confirmed that Brock Osweiler will not play Saturday night in Tampa Bay. "I want to see the young guys," Jackson said, referring to DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan.

Hue Jackson was asked why he didn't put the opening game starting quarterback decision to bed when he named DeShone Kizer the starter for the third preseason game. His response: "Well it's in the bed. … So I'm very close to putting it to bed." Jackson said the Browns clearly are trending toward starting Kizer in opener, and it would take a really bad night in Tampa for Kizer not to start against the Steelers.

Gareon Conley seems to be getting closer. The first-round draft pick was working with a trainer on the field after walkthrough. The cornerback has not practiced due to a leg injury since mid-June in minicamp.

Sean Payton said he doesn't think Saints LB Stephone Anthony will be out long with an unspecified injury that has sidelined him for more than a week. Payton generally declines comment on injuries during training camp but was asked if it hurts Anthony to be missing this valuable audition/development time. "Listen I think it's always challenging when you're not available," Payton said. "And yet I think that it won't be too long."

Bears starting cornerback Prince Amukamara is back at practice after missing time due to mild hamstring injury. Still no sign of defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard.

Chicago Bears back at it after an off day. Big storyline this week is whether rookie Mitchell Trubisky takes any first team reps in practice or in Sunday's preseason game at Tennessee.

The Saints have agreed to terms with veteran special teams standout Bryan Braman, according to his agent, Sean Stellato. And they signed undrafted rookie cornerback/kick returner Elijah Mitchell from Nevada while waiving second-year center Jack Allen with an injury designation, according to Sean Payton. Braman, 30, spent the past three years with the Eagles and three years with the Texans before that. The 6-5, 241-pounder, who is listed as a DE/OLB, was a core special teams player in both spots.

Coach Jay Gruden praised defensive lineman Terrell McClain, saying he "loves" what he's doing. Gruden said he'll be a "major part of our rotation."

Redskins linebacker Junior Galette also returned, having missed the first two preseason games because of a hamstring injury. If all goes well this week he'd finally make his Redskins debut Sunday --after two years.

John Keim ESPN Staff Writer

Coach Jay Gruden said he'd like to see tight end Jordan Reed play vs, Cincinnati on Sunday. It's not imperative but Gruden said they'd like him to "get some involvement in games before you play a (real) game."

Safety Eric Berry is scheduled to play for the Chiefs for the first time in the preseason on Friday night against the Seahawks in Seattle. Berry returned to practice only this week after missing a couple of weeks because of a sore heel but had three full days of work. Others scheduled to play for the Chiefs for the first time in the preseason: defensive linemen Chris Jones and Roy Miller.

Since fantasy owners seem concerned and have asked, no, I'm not adjusting the top-5 ranking overall or by position for Giants WR Odell Beckham because his sprained ankle could cost him a week or two of the regular season. Beckham has never produced much in past Septembers anyway. Still has had dominant seasons. Elite fantasy option.
