With Tyron Smith suffering back spasms and Doug Free working through a quadriceps strain, the Dallas Cowboys will sign offensive tackle Emmett Cleary, who was cut earlier this month by the New York Giants. Before the signing is official, the Cowboys have to clear a roster spot. Cleary was among a number of players the Cowboys worked out after the season opener. The Cowboys don't believe Smith's injury is severe, but Cleary offers some insurance.

Cowboys left guard La'el Collins said the plan is for him to rest his injured right big toe for two weeks before making a decision on surgery. He said several doctors have looked at his toe and there are signs it could heal on his own.

The Panthers officially have signed DT Kyle Love with first-round pick Vernon Butler out at least few weeks with a high ankle sprain. They also signed safety Michael Griffin, a nine-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl selection. They released safety Marcus Ball and placed defensive end Ryan Delaire on injured reserve with a knee injury. Griffin spent nine seasons with the Titans before being released in February. He spent some time with the Vikings before being released with an injury (back) settlement.

WR Brandon Marshall presented a $100,000 check on behalf of the Jets and the NYC Department of Education to the city's Public School Athletic League. The donation will pay for the reconditioning of helmets and the formation of a new football program at a Manhattan HS. Marshall announced the launching of "Project Prevent" -- mental training for young athletes through his foundation, Project 375, and Lucid, a mental training and mindfulness app.

One bye-week transaction: CB Robertson Daniel was released from the practice squad. He was signed last week when DT Brian Price was promoted to the active roster.

On Tuesday afternoon, 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick acknowledged that he is still working on putting back on the weight he lost during his injury rehabilitation. Coach Chip Kelly said Monday that Kaepernick isn't back to 100 percent, which is why he's not ready to consider Kaepernick for the starting job. Asked what he's doing to get that weight back closer to his usual playing weight of 225 pounds, Kaepernick said "Eat food. And a lot of it. That's something that I've always constantly had to do, I always have to be conscious of. I have a very lean body type so putting weight on eating is a little more difficult than (for) others."
