The Steelers have history with free agent safety Michael Thomas, who visited the team Monday. They tried to sign him in 2013 as Thomas moved from the 49ers practice squad to the Dolphins. Thomas, who recorded 191 tackles in 4-plus seasons with Miami, could fill the role left by the released Robert Golden as a special teams standout and third safety.

The Jets announced the signings of DL Xavier Cooper and LB Brandon Copeland, who sat out last season with a torn pectoral muscle after playing for the Lions in 2015-2016. Cooper, a non-tender free agent, filled in for the Jets last season when Mo Wilkerson was benched.

The Raiders have officially announced their trade of WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson to the Patriots. Oakland will also send a sixth-round choice (No. 210 overall) to New England in return for the Patriots' fifth-round selection (No. 159 overall).

The Seahawks' acquisition of cornerback C.J. Smith doesn't affect their 2018 draft picks because the trade compensation included only a 2020 conditional seventh-rounder. As a reminder, the Seahawks have eight selections but will surely try to acquire additional and/or better picks. The eight as of now include none in the second or third round and only one in the top 100. Seattle's picks: Nos. 18 (first), 120 (fourth), 141 (fifth), 146 (fifth), 156 (fifth), 168 (fifth), 226 (seventh) and 248 (seventh).

The Bills on Monday signed former Bengals center Russell Bodine to a two-year deal and former Raiders tackle Marshall Newhouse to a one-year deal, the team announced. Both will add depth and possibly compete for starting roles.

Cornerback remains one of the Seahawks' top needs after their trade for C.J. Smith on Monday. Smith's size (5-11, 189), background (zero starts in two seasons) and the minimal compensation Seattle gave up to acquire him (a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick) indicates he's not someone the team views as a candidate to replace Richard Sherman at left cornerback. He projects more as a backup to Justin Coleman in the slot. Seattle now has seven cornerbacks under contract. Behind starting right cornerback Shaquill Griffin and Coleman, the nickelback, there is: Neiko Thorpe, DeAndre Elliott, Akeem King, Mike Tyson and Smith. Byron Maxwell, who played well as a fill-in last season, is still unsigned.

After starting 24 games in Denver the last two seasons, Trevor Siemian with some perspective on his new role as Kirk Cousins' backup and the state of his new team. "There's a lot of places you can go," Siemian said. "For me to be here in an organization that's knocking on the door of some really, really great things, I think there's a lot of people that would kill to be in this spot."

The Bills on Monday hosted former Bengals linebacker Kevin Minter on a free-agent visit, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates. The Bills have a need at middle linebacker after Preston Brown signed with the Bengals last week.

The Seahawks have added some depth at cornerback by acquiring C.J. Smith from the Browns in exchange for a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick. The 24-year-old Smith went undrafted out of North Dakota State in 2016 and has appeared in 13 games over two seasons with the Eagles and Browns. Smith's size (5-11, 189) and background suggests he's not someone who will push to replace Richard Sherman as the starter at left cornerback, but the Seahawks need depth at the cornerback -- and a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick is about as as insignificant as it gets as far as trade compensation goes.

The 2019 pick the Vikings gave up in the trade for Trevor Siemian (and a 2018 7th round pick) is their 5th round pick.
