The 49ers officially announced the four-year deal for DT Earl Mitchell on Saturday morning. Mitchell agreed to terms on the contract, which is worth $16 million total on Friday afternoon. "As soon as Earl hit the open market, he became a priority for us to sign," said 49ers General Manager John Lynch. "A man of high character, he represents everything we want to be as a football team. Earl is a tone-setter who plays the game with a tremendous passion and the effort necessary to win in this league. We believe those qualities are contagious and will help to make our team stronger. We look forward to the impact Earl will have on the field, in the locker room and in our community."

Mayor of Inglewood, James T Butts says adding a basketball arena for the Clippers could delay the opening of the Rams football stadium in Inglewood by at least 18 months. "To introduce another element in it would require city approval and an EIR (environmental impact report) and that would set the project back by 18 months to two years, Butts told ESPN. "To add a basketball arena in there would stop everything right now."

The league gave the Browns four compensatory draft picks, but the team has traded two away -- a third-round pick for LB Jamie Collins and a fourth-round choice in the Eagles trade involving Carson Wentz. The Browns now have extra fourth- and fifth-round picks, giving them 11 total.

The Seahawks got good news Friday as the NFL awarded them two third-round compensatory picks (Nos. 102 and 106 overall). Last offseason, the Seahawks lost starters Bruce Irvin, Russell Okung, Brandon Mebane and J.R. Sweezy in free agency. They signed journeymen offensive linemen J'Marcus Webb and Bradley Sowell. The two additional selections give Seattle five picks in the first 106 and three picks in the third round.
