In waiving Jordan Gay, the Bills are returning to the NFL norm of carrying one kicker on their roster. Gay had been the Bills' kickoff specialist since 2014, when then-coach Doug Marrone wanted an upgrade over place kicker Dan Carpenter on kickoffs. Rex Ryan kept Gay on the roster last season under the same premise, but now the Bills will likely go back to having Carpenter kick off. NFL's new touchback rule lessens the need for Gay's strong leg.

ILB Ramon Humber, signed by the Bills today, was released Tuesday by the Patriots. Humber, 29, has extensive special teams experience from six seasons with the Saints and two seasons with the Colts.

The Panthers on Wednesday signed safety Stevie Brown, who worked out for the team on Saturday. Brown has played in 55 career regular season games with 20 starts. He had his best season in 2012 with the Giants, starting 11 games and posting 66 tackles and eight interceptions for an NFL-leading 307 return yards. He also had 11 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recoveries that season.
