The Bills have claimed DE Scott Crichton off waivers from the Vikings, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates. Crichton, a third-round pick in 2014, had been a disappointment in three seasons with Minnesota, totaling only 10 tackles and no sacks. He has the size (6-foot-3, 273 pounds) to be a rotational depth player at defensive end for Sean McDermott's 4-3 system in Buffalo; he will carry a $933,081 cap number if he makes the Bills' roster.

The goal - gain knowledge of quarterbacks in order to make good decisions 'when we come to that fork in the road. Who's to say that we aren't there right now?'

A Panthers spokesperson refuted a report by Jason La Canfora of that "many other owners'' expect Carolina owner Jerry Richardson, 80, to sell the team before he dies. The team also refuted speculation that Richardson is skipping the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix because of health issues. "Mr. Richardson is healthy, vigorous, happy and fully engaged in the business of the Carolina Panthers,'' Steven Drummond said in a statement. "The team is absolutely not for sale. These reports are based on the misinterpretation of an agenda item. No owner is more committed to his team than Mr. Richardson.''

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he's been in "pretty fluid conversation" with Ben Roethlisberger about the team, including free agency/draft plans. But talks about Roethlisberger's future have been minimal. "I'm just letting him sort through that process," Tomlin said.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked if New England would trade QB Jimmy Garoppolo. His answer: "I charge (Bill Belichick) to handle all football matters. We're privileged to have the greatest quarterback in the history of the game, and it looks like he's playing pretty solid. He's off the charts, in my opinion, and we're lucky to have him. That's the most important position on the team, needless to say. I don't think anyone could say you have too much depth at that position. I've charged him to make those decisions. I'll leave that with him."
