Dave Tuley ESPN Staff Writer

I did Brent Musburger's "My Friends in the Desert" show this afternoon on XM/Sirius and (should be archived there). We mostly talked NFL betting. Off the air, I asked if he was ever the sports editor at The Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, Ill. He was stunned that I knew that and replied in the affirmative. I told him I had heard that when I was at Northern Illinois University in 1986-88 but was surprised when he retired from play-by-play that all the ESPN tributes, the VSiN story by Matt Youmans and even his Wikipedia page all said his sports writing career started at the Chicago American. But I can see how that could happen. From many articles I've written (plus local radio appearances and Tweets on Twitter), a lot of people believe I got my sports writing start at NIU (and I rarely correct them) while actually I started at the College of DuPage, a two-year college in Glen Ellyn, Ill. So, I can't claim we both got our start in DeKalb, but we both cut our journalistic teeth in corn country.
