Vernon Davis has concussion

SAN FRANCISCO -- 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis did not return to Sunday's 10-9 loss to Carolina after suffering a concussion on a dropped pass in the second quarter.

The team announced in the third quarter he would not return.

Davis missed the game against the Colts in Week 3 with a hamstring injury, which is the last game the 49ers have lost.

Davis is having a career year. He has 29 receptions for 518 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

The 49ers have one healthy tight end for the rest of the game -- rookie Vance McDonald. Garrett Celek was ruled out in the first quarter with a hamstring injury.

The Niners first-round pick, safety Eric Reid, also left the game with a concussion. He had a brutal collision with Panthers running back Mike Tolbert.

It is the second concussion of the season for Reid, who has been terrific as a rookie. He suffered one at Seattle in Week 2.
