Panthers need every-down defensive end

The Panthers are aging quickly at defensive end and could stand to draft an every-down player at the position to boost new coordinator Steve Wilks.

Jonathan Stewart is approaching 30 and struggled to produce this season. Mel Kiper Jr. thinks Carolina could look to upgrade with one of the draft's best talents. Mock 1.0 (Insider)

Carolina could pair up Kalil brothers

David Newton expects the Panthers to look for a new left tackle in free agency. It just so happens that Matt Kalil -- younger brother of Carolina C Ryan Kalil -- might be available. Predicting big changes

Griffin to help remake 'White Men Can't Jump'

A remake of "White Men Can't Jump," the classic basketball movie from the 1990s, is in the works with Clippers forward Blake Griffin and Panthers center Ryan Kalil as co-producers.

And here is another one. The Panthers signed wide receiver Mose Frazier (5-11, 190) to a future contract. He spent time on the Denver, Buffalo and San Francisco practice squads last year.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee will replace Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly in the Pro Bowl. Not a surprise since Kuechly missed the final six games after receiving a concussion, including the final three after being cleared from the concussion protocol.

If the Panthers choose to promote from within the staff to replace Ricky Proehl as they did four years ago when Proehl was bumped up to wide receivers coach they have two good candidates in Cam Turner and Lance Taylor. Don't be surprised if 34-year-old Jerricho Cotchery, who played for the Panthers from 2014-15 and still lives in Charlotte, isn't somehow a part of the mix.

Ricky Proehl, who stepped down as the wide receivers coach for the Panthers on Tuesday, hasn't ruled out a return to coaching after his sons (Austin and Blake) finish playing football. Austin is a rising senior wide receiver at North Carolina and Blake will be a freshman receiver at East Carolina in the fall. So don't call this retirement just yet.

The Panthers are now in the market for a wide receivers coach to replace Ricky Proehl (retired) and a secondary coach to replace Steve Wilks, promoted to defensive coordinator last week to replace Sean McDermott.

Austin Proehl, a rising senior wide receiver for the University of North Carolina, on what it means that his dad, Carolina Panthers wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl, has stepped away from coaching to spend more time with him and his brother Blake, committed to play wide receiver at East Carolina: "To step away from his guys, something he loves doing to be with us, it just shows what kind of man he is. For me, I couldn't be more proud to call him my dad.''

Panthers wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl is stepping away from coaching to spend more time with his sons, who both are college wide receivers. Will be a big loss for Panthers.

Short one of top free agents-to-be

The typically dominant Kawann Short had a so-so 2016 campaign in the middle of the defense, but the explosive DT still ranks as one of John Clayton's top potential free agents for 2017. Top free agents (Insider)
