Ranking best NFL fits for Lamar Jackson

The 2016 Heisman Trophy winner has rare athleticism. Which team could get the most out of the quarterback's skill set? Here are five great options.

Receiver Willie Snead will be present for the start of the Saints' offseason workout program Monday even though he remains unsigned as a restricted free agent, a source confirmed (the news was first reported by the NFL Network). The Saints made the lowest possible qualifying offer to Snead (one year, $1.9 million) to maintain their rights to match any deal Snead might sign elsewhere – but he has not signed an offer sheet with another team. The deadline to sign with other teams is Friday.

New Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson sent a letter to the other 31 NFL owners on Thursday saying she is "fully prepared to assume this role" and will "do so with the same drive and focus towards success that my husband displayed throughout his life." She detailed her desire to continue Benson's legacy with the team and to help the league move forward, and she said she will soon provide the commissioner with her own succession plan.

Safety Kenny Vaccaro, one of the top-rated free agents still on the market, is visiting with the Dolphins on Thursday according to a source (as first reported by the NFL Network). Vaccaro, 27, flashed great potential in a versatile role with the Saints over five years after being drafted in the first round of 2013. But he also battled some inconsistency and injuries while racking up 67 career starts, 385 tackles, eight interceptions, 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. The 6-foot, 214-pounder is probably most effective as a strong safety closer to the line of scrimmage, but he is also very good at covering receivers out of the slot.

The Saints have some new opponents on their preseason schedule. They're at Jacksonville in Week 1, home vs. the Cardinals in Week 2, at the Chargers in Week 3, then home against the Rams in Week 4. As always, it will be interesting to see if they sign up for any joint practices. They practiced with the Chargers in L.A. last year. But they haven't faced the other teams in the preseason in at least four years -- and they've never had a preseason game at Jacksonville.

The analysis on New Orleans' signing of receiver Cameron Meredith is pretty simple. If he comes back healthy from a major knee injury, the Saints might have landed one of the best bargains in all of free agency. But that's obviously a big “if” since the Bears weren't willing to make the same kind of investment in their promising young receiver, who broke out in 2016 before tearing his ACL in 2017. The Saints labeled WR as a “must” this offseason, and Meredith will be reunited with Saints/former Bears receivers coach Curtis Johnson.

Saints offensive lineman Gabe Ikard announced his retirement last week. The 27-year-old journeyman spent time with the Titans, Bills, Browns, Lions, Broncos and Saints during his four-year career after going undrafted out of Oklahoma – mostly on practice squads. The Saints signed him to a reserve/futures contract in January after he spent time on their practice squad last year.
