Eagles' WR Matthews: Contract isn't an issue

Jordan Matthews said Thursday that his absence from a good portion of spring practices was because of a lingering knee issue and not over concerns with his contract.

During the team's first full-squad practice of training camp, Wentz targeted Jeffery deep down the right sideline. Jeffery, surrounded by a pair of defenders, rose up to secure the catch. The young QB is now armed with some playmakers.

Rookie report: Former Houston QB turned Eagles receiver Greg Ward has opened some eyes in the early stages of camp. "I see he has some instinctive natural movements as a a lot receiver, things that are hard to coach that he does exceedingly well," said OC Frank Reich. "I'm just really surprised. I think he's way exceeded expectations." Ward's Odell Beckham-like one-handed TD is still the highlight of camp so far.

Eagles cut OG Barbre, ex-first-rounder Smith

The Eagles released veteran offensive lineman Allen Barbre an after announcing earlier on Wednesday that Isaac Seumalo would go into training camp as the starting left guard. The team also waived former first-round pick Marcus Smith.

Overheard: "The body will do what the mind tells it to do." Eagles wide receivers coach Mike Groh to his players at the conclusion of Day 3 practice. Rookie Mack Hollins had a drop in the end zone moments before. Groh is emphasizing concentration and will power to his young receivers early.

Philly was far better in Doug Pederson's first season as head coach when playing at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles won only three home games in 2015.

Play of the day: Eagles QB Carson Wentz dropped a touchdown pass into WR Marcus Johnson in the corner of the end zone with CB Rasul Douglas in coverage. Johnson, a second-year player out of Texas, is someone to keep an eye on this summer. He could make the team with a strong camp.

Overheard: "You're afraid of confrontation. You've got to get that out of your system. You've got to create the confrontation!" Eagles DL coach Chris Wilson to rookie DE Derek Barnett during pass rush drills Tuesday. Barnett explained afterwards that Wilson wants him to get on the tackle as quick as possible to put pressure on him. The first-round pick could be an immediate contributor and is getting coached up hard at the start of camp.
