DT Johnathan Hankins is visiting the New York Jets today. Former Giants second-rounder was cut by the Colts last month after one year. Hankins also has visited Washington. He just turned 26 on Sunday, and Pro Football Focus had him as the third-best run-stopping DT in the league last year, behind Damon Harrison and Ndamukong Suh.

Rypien talks his mental health, suicide attempt

Former Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien says he has attempted suicide and suffers from depression -- the result of mental health issues stemming from his football days.

Doug Williams and John Elway both phoned Su'a Cravens after the trade prompting his agent, Peter Schaffer, to say, "How often does a young kid get calls from two Super Bowl MVPs back-to-back in five minutes?" Of Cravens' desire to play long-term, Schaffer said, "That's not even a question in my mind. Every conversation we have, he breathes, he talks, he eats football. I don't understand what people are talking about."

Redskins trade Cravens to 'excited' Broncos

Safety Su'a Cravens, who was cleared to resume football activities in late December after suffering from post-concussion syndrome, has been acquired by the Broncos in a trade with the Redskins.

Pernell McPhee's contract breakdown has been entered into the system: It's a one-year deal worth $1.8 million, but he'll only count $1.7 million vs. the salary cap. He received a $350,000 signing bonus -- the only portion that's guaranteed. So if he somehow doesn't play well or gets hurt, he's easy to cut in camp. He receives a roster bonus of $31,250 per game up to $500,000. It's certainly a cost-effective contract for the Redskins. Junior Galette turned down what he felt was a low offer from the team. McPhee will be a backup outside linebacker for Washington.

The Redskins lost Trent Murphy to free agency and withdrew an offer to Junior Galette, so they lost two good pass rushers. So newly-signed Pernell McPhee needs to provide quality backup play behind Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith. McPhee provides more of what they'll lose without Murphy: A bigger-bodied linebacker at 274 pounds, who can be used in multiple ways. McPhee's versatility in Baltimore got him paid in Chicago. But injuries disrupted his play there; McPhee missed 12 games combined in three years. He has 31 career sacks – 17 with Baltimore and 14 with Chicago.
