Redskins defensive end Anthony Lanier is an undrafted free agent with a legitimate chance to earn a roster spot. He made a nice stop after being double teamed Friday night. He also rejected a pass, allowing him to use his basketball background -- he played two years of hoops at Alabama A&M. "It was like pinning someone to the backboard," Lanier said.

One player having a tough night: Redskins center Kory Lichtensteiger. He's been called for three holding penalties and has given up pressure on other plays. It's bad timing for Lichtensteiger as the Redskins just traded for center Bryan Stork. If Stork decides to continue playing – there was still doubt if he would – then he could push Lichtensteiger for the starting job "soon" according to one source. Lichtensteiger, who suffered nerve damage in his shoulder last season, had a tough preseason opener as well.

After a sloppy start, the Redskins' offense has done a better job. It helps that Buffalo isn't using a lot of its starters, but quarterback Kirk Cousins has made better decisions and receivers are getting more yards after the catch. Some of it is play design, as on the 39-yard catch and run by DeSean Jackson in which they clear out a side. Other times it's just a missed tackle. But it's helped the Redskins find the rhythm they wanted.

Redskins linebacker Preston Smith is playing with a lot of power this summer, from the time camp opened. The Redskins, though, wanted to see him finish plays and tonight that's what he's done. Smith split a double team and made a tackle for a five-yard loss. It was pure power and using excellent technique – a strong base and equally strong hands enabled him to shed.

Redskins rookie running back Keith Marshall is undergoing X-rays on his left elbow. He was hurt on his first carry of the night.

The Redskins' starting offense looks like it hasn't played in a couple weeks, which most of them haven't. Tight end Jordan Reed and receiver Pierre Garcon have dropped passes. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has thrown an interception and threw behind an open Ryan Grant, who reached back but couldn't hold onto the ball. This isn't how the Redskins wanted their starters to end the preseason.

Redskins corner Josh Norman is fired up in his first action in a Redskins home game. He punched the air a few times after defending Buffalo's Sammy Watkins on the first drive and then after breaking up a pass in the end zone on the next series, he again threw his fist into the air.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins had a bad first series. He threw off his back foot under duress – he had nothing on the ball – over the middle and was lucky it wasn't intercepted. On the next play, Cousins made another bad decision after looking to his left he threw an out to the right where the corner, Corey White, was all over Rashad Ross. Cousins' bad decision resulted in an interception. Those back-to-back plays are ones where he must be smarter.

The Redskins did a good job with their coverage, enabling them to also apply pressure. That was true on the hit by linebacker Preston Smith. He came in untouched but quarterback Tyrod Taylor had to hold the ball an extra half-second because corner Josh Norman had receiver Sammy Watkins covered. Norman celebrated with a fist pump.

The Redskins still expect center Bryan Stork to report this weekend but there remains uncertainty if he'll play. The Redskins traded for Stork earlier this week with New England.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins didn't play last week vs. the Jets but he is expected to play one half tonight vs. Buffalo. But that could change if he has a strong first quarter. The Redskins goal is to get a rhythm and then leave healthy.

John Keim ESPN Staff Writer

The Redskins wanted to get good work in vs. the Bills' defense but Buffalo will be resting key starters such as linebackers Preston Brown and Jerry Hughes and defensive lineman Kyle Williams.

John Keim ESPN Staff Writer

Redskins coach Jay Gruden wants to play his starters at least one half vs. Buffalo tonight. This will be their last work of the preseason as the Redskins don't play their starters in the final preseason game.
