After loss, Cowboys at a loss on snap penalty

A first-ever snap penalty for the Cowboys' L.P. Ladouceur pushed a game-tying field goal to 52 yards, and it was then missed by Brett Maher when the ball hit the upright.

Dak Prescott said he was checked for a concussion in the first half after taking a big hit along the sideline on a 5-yard scramble. “I've been hit many times and it was a good solid hit, but I was fine,” Prescott said. “Obviously I got checked for all that. We have the best doctors. They called down for me to get checked again. I was fine.” Prescott said his left hand was dinged on the play but did not affect him in the game.

Only stranger ending to a Cowboys-Redskins' game I've seen than today's 20-17 Dallas loss came in 2006 when Mike Vanderjagt's potential game-winning 35-yard try was blocked, picked up by Sean Taylor and returned 30 yards. A 15-yard facemask penalty moved the ball to the Dallas 29 and Nick Novak made a 47-yarder on an untimed play for a 22-19 Washington win.

Brett Maher had made 16 straight field goal attempts before his game-tying 52-yarder hit the left upright. He said he pulled the kick slightly and the wind may have played a part as it was coming down. A snap infraction penalty moved the attempt from 47 to 52 yards. “That penalty had zero impact on the result of that kick, I can promise you that,” Maher said. “(Snapper L.P. Ladouceur and holder Chris Jones), like they've done all year, they made my job easy and it was the same in that situation. Yeah, I felt like I was very capable of making that kick. Just didn't get it done.”

Cowboys long snapper L.P. Ladouceur said he followed the same pre-snap routine prior to the officials flagging him for a snap infraction prior to the attempted game-tying kick.“I just adjusted down so I could put my hands on the bottom of it so I could snap it in the right direction,” Ladouceur said. “Exact same thing I've been doing for 14 years … I'm not even trying to get him offside. I know the situation. Just too bad.” Brett Maher's attempt went from 47 to 52 yards.

After missing his first field goal attempt of the season at Carolina, Brett Maher's 52-yard field goal attempt hits the left upright. Cowboys lose, 20-17. A snap infraction on snapper L.P. Ladouceur moved the attempt from 47 yards to 52. Maher had hit 16 in a row before the miss.

Dak Prescott's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:37 to play means the Cowboys have scored two touchdowns in a road game for the first time this season. So there's good news.

Adrian Peterson looking like he did in his prime. He had 39 yards in the first half on 11 carries. He has 55 yards on eight second-half carries but the Cowboys should thank Washington for taking him out of the game the last two times they got to the Dallas 9. The Redskins have had to settle for two field goals for a 13-7 lead.

Rookie linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is slow to get up after a first-down run. The Cowboys have rotated Vander Esch, Jaylon Smith and Sean Lee with Lee's return to the lineup after a three-game absence with a hamstring strain. Lee has replaced Vander Esch, who limped off the field.

Wow. In 31 previous NFL games, Ezekiel Elliott had only once scored fewer than the 2.5 PPR fantasy points before halftime that he has today. Fortunately, that previous time happened in Week 1 (1.8), and he finished that game with 17.6 points.

After a sleepy first drive in which they allowed a touchdown, the Cowboys defense picked up its level of play for the rest of the first half, holding Washington without a point the rest of the way. Washington gained 52 yards on their first drive but just 76 on their final four possessions of the half. Offensively, the Cowboys have to find a way to get Ezekiel Elliott going (13 yards on 10 carries) but the passing game has been as productive as it has been all season.

After doing next to nothing on their first four possessions, the Cowboys tied the score with Michael Gallup's first career touchdown catch, a 49-yarder on a stutter-go from Dak Prescott. Greg Stroman bit badly on Gallup's route for the second-longest touchdown catch for the Cowboys this season.

Ezekiel Elliott has 8 yards on eight carries. Five of those carries have gone for 1-yard or loss. He has three negative runs. The Cowboys can't get the running game going against the sixth-ranked run defense so far.
