The Bucs have officially named their team captains for 2018 (player vote). Both Jameis Winston and Gerald McCoy are not among them. The captains are: Mike Evans and Ali Marpet on offense, Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander on defense and Adarius Taylor on special teams.

Two changes in the Bucs' injury report: Carlton Davis (back) was a full participant today at practice and Jordan Whitehead (hamstring) sat out. Still no Gerald McCoy or Vinny Curry.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul believes Bucs players need a mentality shift after dropping three straight games and firing defensive coordinator Mike Smith. "Just clear your mind. What's done is done. We can't go back." He also thinks things would be a lot different had they not lost to the Steelers.

Gerald McCoy and Vinny Curry both missed Wednesday's Bucs practice. Here's the full Bucs-Browns injury report:

One of Mark Duffner's former players, John Kaleo, told me he has an incredible memory. He wasn't kidding. Duffner can still remember the day he interviewed with and got the job to coach under Woody Hayes: March 17, 1975. "I thought I was going to be interviewed, but it was ‘I listened and he spoke.'"

Chatted with Dick LeBeau about Bucs' newly-promoted defensive coordinator Mark Duffner, LeBeau's defensive coordinator in Cincinnati. "He's a special man...what you see is what you get...he's extremely truthful, very confident and knowledgeable. He'll give it everything he's got, and I'm sure the players are going to play hard for him.”

The Bucs have released wide receiver Freddie Martino. They have signed offensive lineman Ruben Holcomb and cornerback David Rivers to the practice squad and released tackle Jarron Jones and running back Dare Ogunbowale from the practice squad.

The Bucs allocated $88 million in 2018 cap space to their defense, sixth-most in the NFL, according to ESPN's Roster Management System. That same defense has been giving up 439.8 yards per game under Mike Smith. You can see why frustrations were so high.

Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter called Mike Smith's firing the “second-most difficult” thing he's had to do in his career, behind losing a player at Boise State. They have a lot of history together from their time in Jacksonville and Atlanta

I can confirm that the Bucs have parted ways with defensive coordinator Mike Smith, as first reported by NFL Network. Linebackers coach Mark Duffner will serve as the defensive coordinator now.

Four touchdowns from Jameis Winston should be enough to win an NFL game, but defense continues to hold the Bucs back. Is it the players or the scheme? Lavonte David offered a very interesting perspective.

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

Does Jameis Winston really have a preferred TE to target? The stats in the past five full games he, Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard have played: Brate: 59.8 PPR FPTS, 18 catches on 27 targets Howard: 73.7 PPR FPTS, 18 catches on 21 targets

Just got back from the Bucs' locker room. Mike Evans said he was "sick" by the loss. Kwon Alexander was too upset to even talk.

Ryan throws 3 TD passes, Falcons hold off Bucs 34-29

Matt Ryan threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns as the Atlanta Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak, holding off Tampa Bay 34-29 Sunday in Jameis Winston's return as the Buccaneers starting quarterback.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

The Bucs' comeback hopes against the Falcons were dashed at the Atlanta 21-yard line when, after a series of laterals with :07 left, the ball bounced out of DeSean Jackson's hands, giving the Falcons a 34-29 victory. Winston threw four touchdowns and two interceptions. A defense that surrendered 416 yards did them absolutely no favors and continues to be their Achilles' heel this season.

Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is officially out for the remainder of the game with a right calf injury. Cornerback Ryan Smith is being evaluated for a concussion.
