Coach Chip Kelly did not name a traditional starter at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason opener against the New England Patriots on Friday, saying Wednesday that both Michael Vick and Nick Foles would get first-team reps.
A team source told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio that Vick is expected to start. However, Kelly told reporters not to read too much into who leads the offense in the first series of the game.
"They're both going to get reps, so whoever takes the first rep, let's not anoint them as anything," Kelly said after the Eagles' joint practice with the Patriots on Wednesday, according to the team's website.
"We do have to have someone start the game, but I wouldn't say that the guy who starts the game is going to be the starter overall or in general as we get going on Sept. 9 [versus the Washington Redskins on ESPN's "Monday Night Football"]," Kelly said.
He said the coaching staff would try to make the snaps Vick and Foles take "as even as possible."
