Rhett Nelson

CB | (0-0, 200) | Colorado State
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Redshirted in 1998. Played in nine games and started the Liberty Bowl in '99. Was a backup in 2000 until he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery and forced him to miss the last four games. Shoulder was a major problem for most of the '01 season, but he was able to start final three games. Started 12-of-13 games in '02, but missed one start and considerable time with a shoulder and neck injury and resulting stinger suffered vs. Brigham Young. In '01, had 20 tackles and blocked a field goal. In '02, had 46 stops, 13 passes broken up, two picks and one touchdown scored after a teammate recovered a fumble and lateraled the ball to Nelson, who used his speed to go 54 yards for the score.

Positives: Well-built with good height and weight, long arms and big hands. Looks the part and has exceptional timed speed. Does an excellent job of covering punts and kicks and is a kick blocker. Good overall special-teams player. Has a chance to develop as a corner if the light ever goes on for him. Improved a lot in '02, but still really does not seem to see the big picture.

Negatives: Lacks top instincts and feel on defense. Looks a little stiff and straight-linish for backed-off, man-on-man coverage. Has been just an average college cornerback to date.

Summary: A special-teams player who could develop at cornerback but right now could not play corner at the NFL level although he has a tremendous size-speed ratio for the position.
