Tully Banta-cain

LB | (0-0, 264) | California
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Redshirted in 1998 and was a backup linebacker and special-teams player in '99. Moved to defensive end in 2000 and had 25 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 51 sacks. Started all but one game in '01 and recorded 33-17-8. Four of those sacks, however, came vs. a horrible Rutgers team. Was a starter and the team's best pass rusher again in '02, when he had 39-22-13.

Positives: Good pass rusher on the college level. Has decent quickness off the ball and has the speed to turn the corner and get upfield. Improving moves and technique. Plays hard and does not give up very quickly.

Negatives: DE-OLB tweener who is too small to play the run and gets engulfed by the bigger tackles he faces. Lacks great explosive quickness and speed. Must beat the blocker early, or he will really struggle. Does not drop well enough to be a 4-3 linebacker.

Summary: Best bet may be as a 3-4 pass-rush linebacker but may not have the explosiveness to be a really good one. He seems to thrive, however, on being overlooked and played well in All-Star games.
