Garrett Smith

DT | (0-0, 300) | Utah
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Weight man who finished fifth in the state of Utah in the shotput and fourth in wrestling in high school. Redshirted in 1998, started seven of 11 games in '99 and every game in 2000 and '01. Started 11 games at defensive tackle in '02, making 38 tackles and 41 tackles for loss.

Positives: High-energy player who gives fine effort and really likes football. Has good football intelligence and instincts and is hard to fool. Is OK changing directions and redirecting because he has good balance and plays on his feet. Plays bigger, faster and stronger than his numbers and has better-than-good quickness. Coaches believed he was the best defensive linemen in the conference.

Negatives: Is slow to shed blocks, gets high and pushed off the line and stays blocked too long. Has very average size and speed and gets too upright. Lacks upper-body strength (with bench-press of 330 pounds) and does not use his hands well. Has a history of manic depression. Lacks good character, has had problems with the police and brings baggage. Can be very moody at times.

Summary: Size and speed are concerns, but Smith will be on the radar late in the draft.
