Nick Barnett

LB | (0-0, 236) | Oregon State
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: High school hurdler and weightlifter. Enrolled as a linebacker in 1999 but moved to safety and played in every game, primarily on special teams. Shifted to outside linebacker in 2000, played in every game and started five games at the "Will" LB spot. Started every game at "Sam" LB position in '01. Had 44 tackles, three tackles for loss and broke up one pass in 2000. Had 73-6 with two sacks, broke up four passes with one interception in '01. Started all 13 games in '02, making 121-201-6, two forced fumbles, seven passes broken up and one blocked kick. Had a strong Combine performance, with a 6.87 three-cone and 32 reps of 225. Also showed he was intent on playing linebacker by added considerable bulk since the end of the '02 season.

Positives: Intense, high-energy player. Good, strong worker who is well-liked. Solid student. Fluid speed to close. Good athletic ability. Experience at strong safety. Alert in zone coverage. Instinctive. Good athletic ability and awareness. Can run with tight ends or running backs and cover. Durable, very good player with high character. Good weight room numbers. All-out effort player who should do well on special teams. Very active, run-to-the-ball type of linebacker who must be free to roam to be effective.

Negatives: Does not have great size or big frame. Has to be playing against air or gets engulfed. Takes bad angles at times. Slow to shed blocks and plays better in space. Gets walled off and sealed. Will downshift when changing directions.

Summary: Strong safety/outside linebacker tweener with the frame of a safety, though with added weight looks more like a linebacker. Although he's no Adam Archuleta, he might have been better suited to play safety at the next level before adding weight.
