Kawika Mitchell

LB | (0-0, 253) | South Florida
By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Enrolled at Georgia out of high school. Redshirted in 1998 and left after spring practice in '99. Came to South Florida in the fall, played in every game and had eight starts at "Will" and "Mike." Started every game at "Will" in 2000 and all but one game (due to a death in the family) in '01, when he led the team in tackles. Had 67 tackles and one interception in '99; 77 tackles in 2000; and 106 tackles in '01. Was thrown from a car going 50 mph, but was OK other than a slight shoulder separation. Played in 11 games in '02, with 117 tackles (72 solo), 19 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception, five passes broken up, 16 QB hurries, one recovered fumble and two forced fumbles. Four-year starter and all-time leading tackler at school. Strength (25 reps of 225) and test numbers impressed scouts at the Scouting Combine.

Positives: Tough, durable and plays hurt. Has speed to get outside, is well-built, thick, broad and has a good butt. Good play strength with a 410-pound bench press. Leader who is coachable. Has straight speed and will compete. Has a 37-inch vertical.

Negatives: Struggles turning hips and getting depth in pass coverage. Takes blockers on high. Lacks change of direction and lateral speed and overruns a lot of plays. Lacks foot quickness and agility in coverage. Average reading and reacting. Gets caught in tracks. Plays stiff and high.

Summary: Was considered a fringe-type until his Combine workout. Was very productive at South Florida and his athleticism indicates he can make the jump.
