In Tobias Rieder, the Los Angeles Kings are getting a speedy winger having a curiously underwhelming season, despite being in a contract year and headed to restricted free agency. His 5-on-5 point production (0.259 per game), possession metrics and high-danger chances are all down. As Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said earlier this month, via ArizonaSports.com: "He's got to get inside the dots. He just hasn't really done much." That said, the Kings didn't give up much here in goalie Darcy Kuemper, getting Rieder and goalie Scott Wedgewood in return; with Arizona retaining 15 percent of his contract, it's worth the chance that Rieder rebounds on a clear playoff contender.

Team USA had no business winning their game against the Czech Republic, and their 0-for-5 performance in the shootout was symptomatic of that. Their zipless effort allowed the Czechs to dominate possession in the second period, and parts of the third. They failed to capitalize on a slashing penalty called with 1:20 left in regulation, giving them 40 seconds of 4-on-3 power play in overtime. They failed to register a shot. "We couldn't put it together. We looked scrambled in that key moment," said captain Brian Gionta. The Americans are eliminated from the Olympic tournament, 3-2, with the Czechs advancing to face OAR in the semifinals. It's the first time since 2006 Team USA's men's team didn't reach the medal round. This should have been a moment where Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel led the U.S. on a hunt for gold. Instead, with the NHL staying home, they go out with a whimper.

What a moment for Jim Slater. His shorthanded goal at 10:23 of the second period gave Team USA a 2-2 tie with the Czech Republic on their Olympic quarterfinal, during a period when the Czechs basically set up a base camp in the American defensive zone. Not bad for a guy who was on the verge of retirement before getting the call from USA Hockey. "My wife was like, 'You gotta go for it and give yourself an opportunity.' That's what I did and it's worked out, and it's definitely been worth it," said Slater, to Click On Detroit earlier this month. Slater, 35, played 584 games in the NHL, mostly with the Atlanta Thrashers.
