Sabres

NHL

The Buffalo Sabres have dropped star center Jack Eichel (5 goals, 11 assists in 20 games) down to the third line with Zemgus Girgensons and Jason Pominville, after he spent the majority of the season skating on the top line with Evander Kane (11 goals). Eichel's season has been an inconsistent conundrum: Great at even strength offensively, leading the Sabres in primary points per 60 minutes at 2.42; disappointing defensively, with a minus-42 Corsi for/against that's second-worst among Buffalo forwards; and atrocious on the power play, where Eichel hasn't scored a goal this season on 23 shot attempts. (He has just one assist on the power play, despite a team-leading 75:38 of ice time.) Coach Phil Housley defended the demotion by saying it's not a demotion: "I don't think Eichel is being demoted. I think he's such a terrific player you can put anybody on his wings." Reality check: The last-place Sabres (5-11-4, 14 points) are a disaster, and this move puts Eichel under the microscope one year before his franchise-defining 8-year, $80-million contract extension kicks in. Let's see if this inspires him to give a complete effort in both ends, or makes him more despondent in another lost season for the 21-year-old phenom.

Something to remember about the 10-game suspension to Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas, for slashing the neck of Winnipeg Jets forward Mathieu Perreault: It's the culmination of over two years of warnings, benefits of the doubt and two suspensions from the NHL Department of Player Safety – the last one being six games. Some suspensions can be a way to educate players on what not to do; others, like this one, are about targeting repeat offenders so they stop offending repeatedly. This needed to be emphatic. At 10 games and $408,536 in lost wages, it was. And the bar is reset for the next time he attacks the head of an opponent.
