The Nick Holden trade is a nice little move for both the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Holden, 30, has a low cap hit ($1.65 million) and an expiring contract. He bolsters the Bruins' left side on defense, perhaps to avoid asking Matt Grzelcyk to do too much in his first postseason. The third-round pick the Rangers get for this rental adds another selection to an important draft board this June. If Rob O'Gara, 24, becomes something more than the AHL defenseman he appears to be at this point, all the better. He goes RFA this summer.

While the focus for the Philadelphia Flyers has been on their goaltending injuries, which necessitated a trade for Detroit Red Wings netminder Petr Mrazek on Monday, the loss of winger Wayne Simmonds is also demoralizing. GM Ron Hextall said Simmonds is out for 2-3 weeks with an upper body injury, after having appeared in all 59 games this season with 20 goals and 17 assists. He and Jake Voracek had found some nice chemistry with rookie Nolan Patrick recently, as Patrick had six points in 10 games. The Flyers are third in the Metro, tied with the Devils at 70 points. Losing Simmonds hurts; but losing goalies Brian Elliott for five weeks and Michal Neuvirth for 4-6 weeks will hurt more if Mrazek and rookie Alex Lyon can't stabilize the crease.
