Bruins

NHL

The Boston Bruins have finally decided that this Matt Beleskey thing isn't working out, placing him on waivers on Thursday. He signed a five-year, $19-million free agent contract with the Bruins in July 2015, capitalizing on a career year of 22 goals and 10 assists with Anaheim. He had 15 goals and 22 assists in his first season in Boston; since then, he's battled through injuries and general ineffectiveness, with three goals and five assists in 49 games last season and no points in 14 games this season. His last goal was on March 15. He has two more years left on his deal with a $3.8 million cap hit, although his base salary drops from $4 million to $3 million next season. Will another general manager offer a change in scenery, or is the book on the 29-year-old winger that he was an offensive anomaly that was lucky to cash in when he did?

Senators

NHL

Fare thee well to Chris Neil, who retired on Thursday after playing 1,026 games with the Ottawa Senators from 2001-2017, scoring 112 goals and 138 assists. Of course, the number we'll most remember from Neil are those 2,522 penalty minutes, as he goes down as perhaps the preeminent "energy" line guy in franchise history. He could be a pain in the rear for opposing players that he was agitating, and a pain in the face when he'd drop the gloves to lift the energy levels for his team. "I was a late-round pick in the NHL. I always had something to prove," said Neil, who was a sixth-round pick in 1998 by the Senators, the only franchise he played with in the NHL. "I hope that my demonstration of work hard has a been an inspiration for some."
