The NHL's one-game suspension for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson, for boarding Boston's Frank Vatrano on Thursday, makes sense. His game misconduct occurred early enough into the first period that this becomes the de facto two-game suspension it should have been for a regretful hit. But some fans are asking why Zack Kassian of the Oilers didn't get a hearing for his brutal hit on Chicago's Ryan Hartman that night, which earned him a boarding minor. The Dept. of Player Safety looked at it, and determined it was a hit to Hartman's side rather than the numbers, as Hartman "opened up" into the hit. A penalty, for sure, but nothing suspension worthy for Kassian, which was the right call.

At this point, it's safe to wonder if there's been a year's-long voodoo hex placed on Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, who's out with yet another significant injury. This time it's a broken right fibula, suffered in a sequence in which he blocked two shots on the same shift against Vancouver on Thursday night. Over the years, McQuaid has battled everything from concussions to blood clots to taking a teammate's skate blade to the throat. He's averaged 62 games per season since 2010 (lockout season excluded), and will miss up to eight weeks after surgery.
