Sabres

NHL

The Buffalo Sabres have dropped star center Jack Eichel (5 goals, 11 assists in 20 games) down to the third line with Zemgus Girgensons and Jason Pominville, after he spent the majority of the season skating on the top line with Evander Kane (11 goals). Eichel's season has been an inconsistent conundrum: Great at even strength offensively, leading the Sabres in primary points per 60 minutes at 2.42; disappointing defensively, with a minus-42 Corsi for/against that's second-worst among Buffalo forwards; and atrocious on the power play, where Eichel hasn't scored a goal this season on 23 shot attempts. (He has just one assist on the power play, despite a team-leading 75:38 of ice time.) Coach Phil Housley defended the demotion by saying it's not a demotion: "I don't think Eichel is being demoted. I think he's such a terrific player you can put anybody on his wings." Reality check: The last-place Sabres (5-11-4, 14 points) are a disaster, and this move puts Eichel under the microscope one year before his franchise-defining 8-year, $80-million contract extension kicks in. Let's see if this inspires him to give a complete effort in both ends, or makes him more despondent in another lost season for the 21-year-old phenom.
