Capitals

NHL

Washington Capitals top center Nicklas Backstrom is mired in a humbling slump, with just two even-strength assists in his last 13 games. His former linemate, Alex Ovechkin, has doesn't have an even-strength point in his last six games. As the Capitals struggle offensively (23rd in the NHL at 2.73 goals per game), many are wondering why these two aren't back on a line with right wing T.J. Oshie that generated 30 goals last season. "Just don't feel like it," was the explaination from Barry Trotz, coach of the 11-10-1 Capitals, who believes Backstrom is getting enough chances that a reunion with Ovechkin isn't warranted. "You want players to go through different experiences. They have to figure it out on their own." Oshie, who has skated just 14 minutes and 5 seconds with Ovechkin and Backstrom this season, is open to a reunion. "Yeah, whatever Trotzy thinks. My game doesn't change much. I think he's just trying to see what works," he said.
