Nebraska-Omaha standout inks three-year deal

Dallas Stars: The Stars signed goaltender Dan Ellis, their second-round draft pick in the 2000 draft, to a three-year
contract Monday.

Picked 60th overall in the 2000 draft, Ellis played the last three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Last season, Ellis appeared in 39 games, posting an 11-21-5 record with a 3.18 goals-against-average. In 2001-02, he ranked fourth in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in GAA (2.42) and tied for fourth in wins (20).

He spent the 1999-00 season with Omaha of the United States Hockey
League, where he set a league record with 11 shutouts and was named
both the player and goaltender of the year with a 34-16-4 record
and a 2.25 goals-against-average.

The Stars report to training camp Sept. 12.

Vancouver Canucks: The Canucks signed first-round draft pick Ryan Kesler on Monday.

Kesler, the 23rd overall pick last June, had 11 goals, 20 assists and 44 penalty minutes last season at Ohio State, winning the team's most valuable freshman award.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound center was a member of the U.S. team
that won the 2002 Under-18 World Championship.
