MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey is
creating the Gainey Foundation in honor of his late wife and his
daughter Laura, swept overboard in the Atlantic last Christmas.
Gainey was joined Wednesday by his three surviving children in
setting up the fund, which will support causes dear to his late
wife Cathy and his daughter Laura. It was the first time he has
discussed his daughter's death since the tragedy.
The 25-year-old was swept by a wave off the Picton Castle, the
tall ship on which she was working about 475 miles off Cape Cod. A
three-day search in the Atlantic Ocean was fruitless.
Gainey is a member of the hockey Hall of Fame who won five
Stanley Cups during a 16-year career with the Canadiens. He had met
twice with the media since her death but had not discussed it.
