Leafs' Clarke MacArthur suspended

NEW YORK -- Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur was suspended Saturday for the rest of the preseason and two regular-season games for hitting Detroit's Justin Abdelkader in the head.

This was the ninth suspension levied by NHL senior vice president and new disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan during the preseason. Those bans now total 31 regular-season games and close to $700,000 in lost salary.

MacArthur forfeits $35,135 in salary and is eligible to return to Toronto's lineup Oct. 15 against Calgary. The Maple Leafs have just one preseason game left, against the Red Wings Saturday in Toronto.

His hit came late in the third period Friday of Toronto's 4-3 overtime victory against the Red Wings in Detroit. No penalty was assessed.
