Andy Sutton suspended indefinitely

Andy Sutton of the Edmonton Oilers has been suspended indefinitely for his hit on Alexei Ponikarovsky of the Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL announced Thursday.

Sutton is a repeat offender this season, having already served a five-game suspension for a head-high hit on Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche.

In Wednesday's game, Sutton left his feet while checking Ponikarovsky against the boards.

Sutton has been offered the option of an in-person hearing, the league said.

Under the league's collective bargaining agreement, the offer of an in-person hearing means the league could suspend Sutton for six games or more if it chooses to do so.
