The 32-year-old veteran center took a hit from Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta on Sunday night that sent him sprawling head-first into the boards in the Rangers' 3-2 shootout win. Kaleta was suspended five games for the play after a phone hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Monday.
Richards skated Tuesday morning, but did not stay on the ice for long. He also missed Monday's practice while recovering from the effects of Kaleta's hit.
Rangers coach John Tortorella said Richards is "banged up."
After Sunday's game, Richards said his head and neck, both of which were jammed into the boards on the dangerous check from behind, were so far "not an issue," although he was experiencing soreness.
Replacing him in the lineup against Philadelphia was Micheal Haley, who was recalled from the AHL on Tuesday afternoon.
