Gila River Arena
Gila River Arena9400 W. Maryland Ave.
Glendale, AZ 85305
The arena opened in 2003 as Glendale Arena before local online company Jobing.com purchased naming rights in 2006. The arena is the hub of the $1 billion Westgate City Center entertainment and sports complex. The Coyotes' long-term stay in Glendale remains uncertain. The NHL bought the team out of bankruptcy last fall for $140 million, but rumors persist that the team could relocate if a local owner is not found. The City of Glendale recently issued a statement saying a prospective buyer has deposited $25 million into escrow, meeting the league's demands to keep the team in the city. According to the arena's Web site, the 34,000-pound center scoreboard (which measures 28 feet by 28 feet) cost $2.5 million. The arena also sounds a Coyotes "howl" after each goal and as a way to get the crowd into the game. The arena has been host to the Arizona state high school basketball and wrestling tournaments in a mega-event called "February Frenzy." Additionally, the arena has hosted major musical acts such as U2, the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.
