The Kings used to play at the Great Western Forum from 1967 to 1999 until Staples Center was built. Although Wayne Gretzky never played for the Kings at Staples Center, a statue of Gretzky is displayed outside the arena. He played for the team from 1988 to 1996 and, along with players like Luc Robitaille, was influential in making the sport popular in California. Staples Center has hosted some of the largest and most prestigious events in the world, plus major hockey events such as the 2012 Stanley Cup finals, the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and the 2002 NHL All-Star Game. Staples Center also is home to the Clippers and Lakers of the NBA and the Sparks of the WNBA and hosts more than 250 events each year, according to the arena's Web site. Directly across the street is the L.A. LIVE campus, which features The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles and JW Marriott L.A. LIVE Hotels, the Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium's 14 theaters, 15 restaurants and Club Nokia, Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE and the Grammy Museum.
