CUENCA, Spain -- Samuel Sanchez won the 13th stage of the
Spanish Vuelta with a late breakaway Friday, and Alejandro Valverde
retained the overall lead.
Sanchez broke away from the pack as it raced down a hill toward
Cuenca in central Spain and held on for the win. He finished the
113-mile route from Guadalajara to Cuenca in 4 hours, 3 minutes and
43 seconds, ahead of Norway's Thor Hushovd and Valverde, clocked
with the same time.
Saturday's leg is a 20-mile time trial in and around Cuenca. The
race ends Sept. 17 in Madrid.
