World record holder van den Hoogenband sits out 100m free

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands -- Two-time Olympic champion and world record holder Pieter van den Hoogenband missed the 100-meter freestyle heats Friday at the European swimming championships due to illness.

The heats also were missing Milorad Cavic after the American-born Serb swimmer was kicked out of the championships for wearing a T-shirt proclaiming "Kosovo is Serbia" as he was presented the gold medal for the 50 butterfly on Wednesday night.

The 100 freestyle had been one of the most anticipated races of the championships, pitting Van den Hoogenband against world champion Filippo Magnini of Italy and short course world record holder Stefan Nystrand of Sweden.

Clearly weakened by a stomach bug, Van den Hoogenband was knocked out of the 200 freestyle in the heats earlier this week and was sent home to recover. After the swimmer failed to appear on the blocks for the 100, Netherlands team manager Aad van Groningen said Van den Hoogenband is recovering and still hoping to swim in relays.
