ROME -- Giro d'Italia champion Ivan Basso's sister, Elisa, has been banned for four years by the Italian Olympic Committee for trafficking banned substances.
In June, Elisa Basso plea-bargained a one-year sentence in a doping trafficking trial involving cyclist Luca Paolini and Paolini's husband, Eddy Mazzoleni, who also is a cyclist.
Mazzoleni received a two-year ban in 2008 after being linked to Carlo Santuccione, an Italian doctor who allegedly provided doping products to athletes.
Ivan Basso was suspended for two years after being linked to the Spanish scandal Operation Puerto on the eve of the 2006 Tour de France. He returned and won his second Giro this year.
Elisa Basso is not an active athlete, but the ban prevents her from attending all sports facilities and events in Italy.
